MOPDC Artist-in-Residence (2012-2013) at The Performance Project @ University Settlement
Her Veiled Reflections explores the secrets women keep and carry. It investigates how secrets shape the ways women move through their lives, view themselves and each other. Experience a dynamic dialogue between movement, live singing, and anonymous contributors who have dared to share their secrets in writing. Watch women unite and empower each other across culture, class, religion, and age. Witness how secrets can be transformed from what keeps us separate into what keeps us connected.
During our residency MOPDC workshopped and developed movement vocabulary that speaks to the inspiration of the over 100 women from around the world, who anonymously contributed their secrets to our online survey. We also facilitated Reflections Workshops, cohesive holistic workshops appropriate for teens and adults with varying degrees of dance experience. We held these workshops for friends/family, various Settlement communities, and neighboring communities. from the embodied knowledge explored, we included movement phrases in our choreography that were conceived in these workshops. Thus, creating a piece of choreography that speaks to, from, and about a multitude of women in various walks of life from around the world, connecting the global society of women on one stage.
We are extremely excited to have created the foundation of Her Veiled Reflections, and hope to share our workshops and performance with communities around the world, blurring the lines between art and activism.
